Walking through Pompeii was unlike any other experience I’ve ever had. One moment, a bustling, wealthy, beautiful Roman city; the next - buried alive under 20 feet of volcanic ash. This shot, with its juxtaposition of the strength and splendor of the Roman columns paired with the fact that only just a trace of them remains, reminds us that nothing, no matter how strong and permanent it may seem in the moment, is permanent. In this vein, the title, “Dust,” was inspired by the biblical phrase, “for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
