The might of the Roman Empire at its height, starting as a small city-state and eventually taking over virtually the entirety of Europe, the Middle East, and Northern Africa, is as fascinating to me as its downfall. The fact that something so small can become so mighty, powerful, and fearsome, and then, once again, become nothing is such a powerful lesson in life. Roman relics always remind me of this undeniable truth. I love this shot of the grand Colosseum of Rome because it simultaneously captures the breathtaking perfection and precision of Roman construction, yet reveals, if only ever so subtly, the impact of the passing of time and strength, as evidenced by the missing stones at the top.
