The Great Wall of China is one of the most breathtaking things I have ever experienced. Its power and majesty are truly impossible to put into words. This shot is near and dear to my heart because most images of the Great Wall depict a long, winding structure atop a mountain range - impressive, yet impersonal; rarely do we get the chance to see its details up close. This image of one of the watch towers brings into view the beautiful details of the Wall’s architecture (colors exaggerated in post-processing), but, more importantly, the intimacy of the shot makes it more personal - it makes one connect, if only for a moment, to the 2 million humans, often in forced labor, involved in the painstaking effort of building 25,000 of these watch towers, and the walls connecting them, totaling 13,000 miles in length, by hand, which makes it that much more complex of a subject to consider.
