With a history of almost 3,000 years, Pingyao is one of the few remaining examples of perfectly preserved Ming and Qing Dynasty urban planning and architecture. Outlined in a square grid and enclosed on all sides by a city wall, with barely any signs of modernity throughout its ancient stone streets, covered in a blanket of its infamous fog, the city is a portal into the past. The blurriness of the shot was not intended - it happened serendipitously as my hand shook, but, as one of my mentors likes to say, “there is no such thing as an accident,” and I fell in love with how it turned out, fully encompassing the ethereal, mystical nature of the ancient city.
